Newconomics 2023 - Meet our Speakers: Nikita Manovich

Have you registered for the Newconomics event yet? Sign up here now to avoid missing your chance to hear from industry leaders who are finding new ways to address work and global economics with web3 innovation. One of our speakers you won’t want to miss is Nikita Manovich, CTO of CVAT.ai. He kindly shared his thoughts on the future of work and addressing ai labelling ahead of the event.

Why Traditional Labeling Falls Short: The Web3 Advantage

Web3 working hand in hand with artificial intelligence (AI) can bring so many opportunities. Most AI algorithms are data hungry. In many cases they are bound by not enough high-quality data. Let’s say you want to analyse the behaviours of people in a museum to improve their experience. To train a robust neural network which can track a person on every frame and correctly predict their pose, you need to annotate millions of objects.

There are data annotation tools with AI capabilities such as Computer Vision Annotation Tool (CVAT) which can help with the task, but you need to connect them with human workforce to complete the task.

This is the real point of these new technologies. HUMAN Protocol allows CVAT.ai to decentralise the job, attract the big human community, and reward people for completed human intelligence tasks. AI datasets can be annotated in days and weeks instead of months and years with the desirable quality.

Why don't we use current technologies to solve the task? There are plenty of labelling companies on the market which can annotate your data. But the price is extremely high, the quality is poor, deadlines are not met, you are bound to a specific company which tries to optimise every dollar which it takes from you. With Web3 you can reach millions of individual contributors to meet mostly any deadlines. Smart contracts will allow you to reward workers and services only for high-quality results which meet requirements.

We still have a way to go to encourage mainstream adoption of web3 tech, average users still have to deal with wallets, private keys and gas fees can feel a bit overwhelming to start with but if people get used to it there are so many benefits including the automation of payment and fair contracts and compensation for workers and services.

I am very excited for the future of web3 for peer-to-peer work arrangements. I particularly like Ethereum and the way that it allows developers to create decentralised applications and smart contracts. This has led to the development of a wide range of projects and these are all inspiration for future possibilities.”
