The Bright Side of AI #9: Medical Miracles by ChatGPT and Building a Greener Tomorrow with Timber

2 min read

AI might not seem as game-changing as it did a few months back, but it's continually unveiling new wonders. Welcome to "The Bright Side of AI #9!"

From Despair to Discovery: A Mother's Journey Aided by AI

For many, 2020 will forever be linked with the pandemic, lockdowns, and curfews. Yet, for Courtney X., the year took on a unique significance. During the lockdown, her 4-year-old son began experiencing unexplained pain. She promptly took him to a pediatrician, but the doctor couldn't pinpoint the problem. She consulted another pediatrician, but to no avail. Three years and 17 specialists later - spanning pediatricians to dentists and therapists - a doctor emerged with a potential diagnosis. That doctor's name: ChatGPT.

After relaying detailed information about her son's condition and sharing MRI results, ChatGPT proposed the possibility of a "tethered cord syndrome". Struck by the accuracy of the diagnosis, Courtney dived deeper into research. She soon discovered a Facebook group for parents with children suffering from the same syndrome, noticing eerie similarities with her son's condition.

Thanks to ChatGPT's insights, a neurosurgeon later validated the diagnosis — a specialist Courtney might never have consulted without the chatbot's guidance.

Embracing Trees' Natural Strength: AI's Role in Eco-Friendly Construction

Concrete construction accounts for 8% of the world's CO2 emissions. But a greener alternative is on the horizon: wood! It's a throwback to traditional methods, and while the construction process using wood is relatively standardized, the cutting stage tends to produce significant waste. Enter Timber, the AI designed to combat this waste.

Timber adeptly optimizes log cutting, preserving the wood's natural fibers. This results in wooden panels with seamlessly interlocking boards, drastically cutting down on material wastage.

This approach mirrors the judo philosophy, harnessing the inherent strength of the tree. It's a potential game-changer, with the potential to conserve up to 60% of the timber processed.

This week we've spotlighted just these two stories. It appears the global focus has shifted to the regulation of AI technologies – a silver lining in itself! Here's hoping we see a decline in the negative headlines as well. To stay in the loop, make sure to follow us on Discord and Twitter.
